The Mumbai Train Taught Me

Every morning, I take the crowded Mumbai local train to work. The platform is always full—people rushing, chai sellers calling out, and the sound of the train arriving. At first, I used to feel tired and irritated by the crowd. Everyone seemed in a hurry, pushing to get in.

One day, I was standing near the door, holding the rail tightly. At the next station, an old man tried to enter but couldn’t find space. People were pushing, and he looked worried. For a moment, I thought, “It’s not my problem.” But then something changed. I moved a little and said, “Come here, uncle, you can stand here.”

He smiled and said, “Thank you, beta.” That small smile stayed with me.

After that day, I started noticing things. A young boy offering his seat to a tired woman. A group of strangers laughing together. Someone sharing snacks with another passenger. The train was still crowded, but it felt different.

One rainy day, the train was delayed, and everyone was stuck for a long time. Instead of getting angry, people started talking, sharing stories, even joking about the situation. I realized that the train was not just taking us to our destinations—it was teaching us patience, kindness, and understanding.

Now, every day when I travel, I try to be a little kinder. I help someone if I can, and I don’t complain as much.

The Mumbai local train is crowded, noisy, and sometimes tiring—but it also brings people together in the most human way.
